‘Bidri’work is a specialised form of metal inlay craft, commissioned by the Bahmani Sultans of Deccan and perfected under their patronage by the master craftsmen of the southern Indian town of Bidar (hence 'Bidri'), The background is usually black or gunmetal grey due to the treatment of the copper-zinc alloy to allow the intricate designs in silver inlay to show well. Traditional Bidri motifs are very typical of Islamic art and craft, featuring mainly floral and geometric patterns and passages from the Quran in Arabic script.
